Two clocks

Calendar year or cardmember year — the issuer decides.

Most credits reset on a calendar boundary: the first of the month, the first of the quarter, January 1 and July 1, or January 1 alone. Some reset on the anniversary of the date you opened the card instead. The two run on different clocks on the same wallet, and the issuer's own wording is the only authority on which applies:

The table marks each credit's basis. A cardmember-year credit cannot be dated for you here — it depends on your own open date, which is exactly why MoneyRoom asks for it when you add an annual-fee card.

What resets on January 1.

82 of the credits above reset once a year on the calendar, so any unused slice is gone at midnight on December 31 — plus every quarterly and twice-a-year credit starts a new window the same day. Filter the table to “Yearly” and “Calendar only” for the full list, and check enrollment first: an unenrolled credit does not reset, it never starts.

Credits that reset on your cardmember anniversary are not on that list. Their deadline is your own open date, which is the reason a calendar reminder set for December is the wrong tool for them.
