Is the Discover it Chrome worth it?
MoneyRoom Card Score
8.2/ 10
For someone who wants Discover without the quarterly homework, yes: 2× on gas and dining, always on, no activation, no fee — and a score that beats its rotating sibling precisely because nothing here is conditional.
Data: MoneyRoom verified card catalog · scores recompute daily
The Chrome is Discover's answer to its own famous card's weakness: where the rotating version's headline rates are opt-in and quarterly, the Chrome's 2× on gas stations and restaurants simply always applies. Our conditional-rate rule — which prices the rotating sibling at its bare base — has nothing to deduct here, so the Chrome's blend of 1.2% effective actually outscores its more celebrated sibling.
The rest is the familiar no-fee profile: empty ledger, ceiling value and effort, headline 8.2. And like every Discover, the first year doubles via the Cashback Match — a genuinely large one-time event that steady-state scoring watches walk by.
The ledger
No fee — the ledger starts at zero.
Typical value applies our published realization factors: the discount for expiry windows, spending restrictions, enrollments, and reimbursement delays a real cardholder faces.
This card has no recurring statement credits. There's nothing to enroll in, track, or forfeit — the ledger is empty by design.
The fine print that matters
Why is typical value less than face value?
The two always-on categories carry a combined quarterly cap before base resumes — modest, and already blended into the effective figure we print — and everything else earns the ordinary base rate, which is where a flat-rate card overtakes the Chrome for diffuse spenders. The strategic read is simple: this card is a commuter-and-diner specialist, and the sibling comparison inverts depending on whether you'll actually do the rotating card's quarterly work.
Earning
What does everyday spending actually earn?
Rewards post as cash back, worth exactly face value. On our published reference basket the effective rate is 1.2%.

Honest gaps
What does the score leave out?
- The first-year Cashback Match. Doubles year one and disappears — the strongest signup economics in the no-fee tier, invisible to a year-two score.
- The sibling calculus. A diligent quarterly player beats the Chrome with the rotating card; an autopilot holder beats the rotating card with the Chrome. Know which you are.
- Discover's fee posture. The broader no-fees philosophy is quality-of-life, not rewards math.

Questions
Asked before applying.
Chrome or the rotating Discover it?
Autopilot: Chrome — its 2× categories never need activating, which is why it scores higher on our conditions-never-count engine. Quarterly players who genuinely do the work flip the answer.
What does the Chrome score?
8.2 out of 10 — ceiling value and effort, earning 4.1 at 1.2% effective with the category cap blended in.
What's the catch?
The base rate outside gas and dining is ordinary, and the bonus categories cap quarterly. A flat-rate card ties or wins for anyone whose spending doesn't concentrate at pumps and restaurants.
